Overview
France built its first rocket range near Colomb-Bechar in the Sahara. Veronique sounding rockets flew from the 1950s, and in November 1965 the Diamant launcher put the Asterix satellite into orbit, making France the third space power. Independence agreements closed the site by 1967 and launches moved to Kourou.
